Carver Barac December 13th/62
Dear wife I received your letter & I was hapy to hear from you & know that you was well & geting along comfortably My health is prety good whe have got into our Barac they are comfortable they are verry comfortable they are divided in four rooms with a stove in each one of them I do not no how long whe shall stay here whe stay some time & whe may not a soldier never nows when they are to moove but a very short time before hand I feel very well contented I cant rite you eny news about the war you know more about it than i do our Barac is about 100 rods from our old Camp ground it is on merideon hill I had a leter from Lauraet lately I have answerd it Lemuel sent me a new years presant it was a box with eatables pipe & tobacco a bottle of linament candy & figs Lauraet rote me you had got your money I have got paid off to day your money I expect will be sent to you Coney of Augusta is the man appointed to distribet / it I dont get but $13 per month that is all a Copporal gets in the regular service it leaves rather short of money I have to by some thing I an easy time of it now I have ben detaild for a Collor guard it takes 8 Copporal to guard the Colors I have to drill 2 ours in the fore noon at the manuel of arms & escort the Collors a bout 2½ ours in the affternoon whe have to have keep our boots blak & wear white gloves when whe go on to the field I am excused from all other duty there is a great deal of sicness in the Regiment whe have lost a number of men in our Company the measel is the prevailing diseas then the Lung Feavor sets in it seems you have had a great menny with you I should like to no what was the matter with Ben Mores The weather is warm here now it has ben quite cold here whe have had a bout 2 inches of snow here it has gone off & the frost is all out of the ground yesterday was a lovely day & evening Augustas Eastmond is here in the 11 regiment I have ben over to the Maine Third to see the Pittston Boys they look ruged Daniel Moody finely he appeard as lively as a bee I went down to Alexandria in a steamboat the Potomac is prety river the cenery along the river is butifull Ciss the Babys for me I should like to see you all But I dont want to come home until our troubles is over Rite soon it seemd a long time betwen your leters

Pork & hard bred or stick it on a stick & broil it when whe were on the pasage down the Potomac all the meet whe had was raw ham to eat with our hard bread I must close my leter for the beans are about done & I must bee in for a share From your Husband
