Camp 2d Maine Cavalry
Barrancas West Fla Dec 27, 1864
Mr Cyrus Works
Dear Sir
Yours of Nov 4th was received while I was in Maine, but for the want of the proper information I was unable to answer it at the time.
I have this day conversed with Capt Roberts, who tells me he has written you two letters. Your son died in Genl hospital in Alexandria Va. He had received a furlough from the Marine hospital in N. Orleans & was on his way home to you in Maine. I am very sorry he was not permitted to reach you. May God overrule this afflicting providence to the good of all his friends. Your son was a good & faithful soldier when he was well & much beloved by all in his Company.
Very Truly Yours
Chas Mason
