           We have met the Enemy and they are Ours.

            We brtoke their lines at Petersburg on the morning of the 2nd and have continued to push & punish them badly till they finely gave out at 3 oclock yesterday (9th
 
Genl. Lee is now in our hands. Thirty or forty thousand of their Army are now in our front, unarmed and well guarded I think that for the last 10 days we have taken and killed &c. 80 thousand of their Reb. Army My love to All & I remain
