Ozias Sanford
Ozias Sanford was born on February 25, 1828, in Cornwall, Vermont, to Daniel Sanford and Dorothy Peck. He worked as a post office clerk in Middlebury, Vermont, around 1850. He enlisted in the Union army on July 23, 1862, and mustered in as a private in the 1st United States Sharpshooters Regiment on September 20, 1862. He apparently transferred to the 2nd United States Sharpshooters Regiment on December 23, 1864, and finally transferred to Company G of the 4th Vermont Infantry on February 18, 1865. On April 10, 1865, he rejoiced that "We have met the Enemy and they are Ours."

He mustered out on June 19, 1865, and returned to Vermont. By 1870, he was working as a farm laborer in Fayston, Vermont. A decade later, he was working as a laborer in Duxbury, Vermont. As one writer observed, however, his “long and active service in the war of the Rebellion undermin[ed] his constitution,” and he applied for a federal pension on October 7, 1889. He died of cancer in March 1898.
