Dorothy Sanford (maiden name: Peck) was born on October 30, 1791, in Cornwall, Vermont, to Jacob Peck and Elizabeth Gibbs. She married Daniel Sanford there on December 7, 1815, and they had at least five children: Juliette, born around 1817; Benjamin Franklin, born around 1820; Horatio, born around 1822; Eliza, born around 1825; and Ozias, born around 1828. Daniel owned a general store in Cornwall and served as justice of the peace. Daniel and Dorothy lived with their daughter Juliette’s family for the final decades of their life, and Dorothy died in Cornwall on March 27, 1873.
