Elizabeth Wiley to Elizabeth B. Harris, undated
Rocky Hill Tuesday 1 Oclock

Dear Elizabeth, I am very much obliged to you for the sloes I don't think they are too ripe. It makes no difference about it being so late, for I am preserving some pears that Mrs. Jones sent me, and think they will be done in time to do the sloes this evening. I am afraid Green has ruined his nice white apron. You ask, what we are doing, I am not doing much, but jobbing and making preserves this hot weather. Mary is mending her thin black dress, when she is not practising music. Your Pa has not yet returned from Augusta, we looked for him some to day, but don't think now he will come till to morrow. Mrs. Neel said she was going to beg you and Mr. Harris very hard to go up the country. I told her I would help her all I could, should like for you to go very much. Mrs. Birt talked of going but has lately heard from her brother in Meriweather Co. and he urges her to come out to the warm springs, and advises her not to go up the country so she says between them all, she don't think she will go to either place, but Mary is looking over my shoulder, and says Mrs B. is going with Mrs. Neel. Samuel met her to day going to town shopping and she told him she was going will I will send Margarets letter if I can find it, we got one (I did) yesterday from Billy, and intended to send it too, but S has been to town this morning and gave it to your uncle John to read. he happened to be busy at the time, and so he came off and left it with him. The most important items of news in it were that your uncle and aunt Jones were better, they were at the spray springs, going to stay some time. Doct Carnes was finishing his house (at the spring) and was going to move down shortly. Billy don't say a word about his school, but complains of us all for not writing, says two mail days have passed without bringing him any letter. He ought to have received mine a week ago to day. I can't think what is the reason he did not, hope he will get it to day, if he / does not he won't get any again, for unless you wrote last week, no one did, it is too bad. Mary says she will write this week. Miss Eliza Cox is to be married this week to a cousin of hers, of the same name, and is going to Tennessee. Mr. Renfroe has returned from Mexico in bad health, and is going to pine knot, to spend some time with your uncle Jones, by invitation. Sallie and Angelise are there, and Miss Tabitha has gone to Columbus to spend some time with an old sick lady. Your Aunt A. told me Sunday she was going to your house Wednesday and I partly promised to go with her but don't much think I can, as your Pa has not come. I want to come very much and will if I can. I don't know what day we shall go to see Eliza Meman, probably Thursday if at all. I have kept Green longer than I ought, it is now 2 Oclock and my pears are done—shall put my sloes right on as soon as possible. If I don't come to your house to morrow, cant you and Mr Harris come down friday or Saturday? do come and you will hear from Augusta. we are all well, except Mr. Chapman, he is a good deal complaining, but not confined. Sylvia has got better and gone to spinning. I believe she got tired waiting. Good bye and keep as cool as you can this hot weather. You see I am trying to do so, by making preserves but am very well.

Affectionately your Mother
Eliza Wiley
