Samuel Ingham to Oliver H. P. T. Morton, 27 April 1862
Tiptonville Ten April 27th 62
To his excilency O P Morton Gov of the State of Indiana
I have been thinking of writing to you some time believeing you would use some means to rid our company of one of the greatest grievences that any company was ever cursed with tis a Lieutenant that has lost all the confidence of the solders of the company I think his faults are manfold He is not a military man he is abuseful to to those that are under him all but men that who will resent are insult those who neads his simpathy such as boys that are fatherless & friendless at home he domineers over with an iron hand so that many lie down to give up to in despondency & almost long for the day of deliverance should that be the day of death he for sook his company at the battle at riddles Point our Captain & Second Lieut being sick consequently we war without / commishioned oficer so we threw ourselves under Captain Goodwin of Wabashtown & was under his command during the engagement & now If you can relieve us of him let me know if you please & if you cannot let us give up in in despondency for we dare not attack him in the camp for his malignoty would know no bounds & perhaps & our grievences would be multiplied to a fearful extent now for the sake of humanity and the ritchous cause we we have espoused relieve us of this anoyance and let us feel as free men once more
