Warrick Hockaday was born around 1829 in Halifax County, North Carolina, to William and Betsey Hockaday. His father was a farmer who owned $20 of real estate by 1850. He married Mary J. Perkins on January 5, 1857, and they had at least three children: John, born around 1857; Sallie, born around 1858; and Warrick, born around 1863. He worked as a farmer in Halifax County, and by 1860, he owned $2,037 of personal property.
He enlisted in the Confederate army on May 14, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company K of the 1st North Carolina Infantry. He fell ill soon afterward, and he was admitted to the hospital with diarrhea on June 9, 1862. He remained there until June 26. The regiment took part in the Seven Days’ Battles, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and the Battle of Gettysburg. He was promoted to corporal on March 20, 1863. He died in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in May 1864.
