Mary J. Hockaday (maiden name: Perkins) was born around 1833 in North Carolina. She married Warrick Hockaday on January 5, 1857, and they had at least three children: John, born around 1857; Sallie, born around 1858; and Warrick, born around 1863. They lived in Halifax County, North Carolina; her husband worked as a farmer, and she worked as a seamstress. By 1860, they owned $2,037 of personal property. Her husband served in the Confederate army, and he died in May 1864.
On November 11, 1866, she married Thomas E. Hockaday, and their son James was born around 1867. Her husband worked as a farmer in Halifax County, and by 1870, they owned $725 of real estate and $100 of personal property. She died sometime after 1870.
