George W. Gentry (62nd USCT)

George W. Gentry was born into slavery around 1842 in Albemarle County, Virginia. His owner was James Gentry. He enlisted in the Union army on November 30, 1863, near Troy, Missouri, for a period of three years. His enlistment records describe him as 5 feet 2 inches tall, with black hair, black eyes, and a black skin complexion. He mustered in as a private in Company B of the 62nd USCT Infantry Regiment on December 8, 1863, in Benton Barracks in St. Louis, Missouri. Gentry, however, fell ill almost immediately, and he died due to complications from an unknown disease at the post hospital in Benton Barracks on December 17, 1863.
