Henry Jessie (109th USCT)

Henry Jessie (Jessy, Jessey, Jesse) was born around 1821 in Albemarle County, Virginia. Little is known about Jessie's life before the war except that he listed his occupation as a farmer or fieldhand. Henry Jessie enlisted and mustered in at the age of 43 as a private on June 30, 1864, in Louisville, Kentucky. Jessie's service record describes him as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with black eyes, black hair, and a black complexion. He served in Company H of the 109th USCT Infantry Regiment. On November 1, 1864, Henry Jessie was sent to the hospital for disease. He died four days later, on November 5, 1864, at the general hospital at Fortress Monroe, Virginia. Army surgeons listed erysipelas, a deep skin infection, as Jessie's cause of death.
