Walker Lightfoot (63rd USCT)

Walker Lightfoot (later known as Dick Hardwin) was born around 1825 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Lightfoot was a slave before the war, and he listed his occupation as a farmer. He enlisted as a private in the Union army on February 1, 1864, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and he mustered in on February 4, 1864, in DeValls Bluff, Arkansas. Lightfoot's service record describes him as 5 feet, 6 inches tall, with black hair, black eyes, and a dark complexion. He served in Company H of the 63rd USCT Infantry Regiment. Strangely, Lightfoot assumed the name and place of Private Dick Hardwin when the original Hardwin mustered out of the regiment due to injury. In July 1864 the regiment detached Lightfoot for service at the Freedman's General Hospital in Natchez, Mississippi. A Walker Lightfoot mustered out on January 9, 1866, from DeValls Bluff; it is possible this is the same Walker Lightfoot. Unfortunately, Lightfoot never filed a pension and his fate after the war remains unknown.
