Funeral of Jesse S. Cowles

Jesse S. Cowles's well-attended funeral was described in The Gazette, a local paper printed in York, Pennsylvania.

 

The Cowles Funeral.

            The Funeral of Rev. Jesse S. Cowles, late the pastor of the King Street M. E. Zion church, took place yesterday afternoon. Rev. Cowles was born December 8, 1848. He came to York about two years ago and became very popular with his people. His wife died last November. Two orphan children whom they had adopted survive them. They were consigned by Rev. Cowles’ will to the care of a friend here in York.

            The services at the house were brief, the Rev. Charles F. Warfield, of Bethel A. M. E. church, leading in prayer.

            The services at the church were so well attended that all who came could not get in the building. The Rev. W. H. Day. A. M. D. D, general secretary A. M. E. Zion church, Harrisburg, led the services. He preached a very eloquent sermon. Rev. J. R. Dunkerly led in the opening prayer.

            Among the ministers who were present from out of town were: Rev. W. H. Day, A. M., D. D., general secretary A. M. E. Zion Church, Harrisburg; Rev. W. H. Snowden, P. E., Harrisburg; Rev. J. H. McMullen, Harrisburg; Rev. Jessie B. Colbert, A. M., Washington, D. C; Rev. S. S. Wales, Chambersburg, Pa; Rev. B. J. Bolding, South Media, Pa; Rev. C. H. Wye, Harrisburg; Rev. S. C. Doby, Shippensburg, Pa; Rev. Timothy Keene, Bennings, D.C.; Rev. W. H. Holmes and Rt. Rev. C. C. Pettey, D. D., Newberne, N. C.

            The York ministers present were Revs. Dunkerly, Crumbling, Hengst, Stearn and Horning.

            The deceased was a member of Social Friendship lodge, No. 42, of the Masons. The pall bearers, members of this lodge, were Isaac Fells, James Washington, Thomas Sidney, Perry Watson, William Armstrong and Emory Fells.

            The interment was at Lebanon cemetery.
