Catherine Jordan

Catherine Jordan (maiden name: Townsend) was living in St. Clairsville, Ohio, by the late 1860s. She probably worked as a domestic servant. She married William Jordan on February 6, 1870, and their son Amos Garfield Jordan was born on July 4, 1880. They lived in St. Clairsville, and her husband earned a living as a laborer. He died on March 9, 1895. She applied for a widow’s pension soon afterward and eventually received one. In 1897, a local writer testified that she was “very poor [and] depends on her labor for her living.” She confirmed that she “possesses no property of any kind or description in excess of fifteen dollars in value” and that she “depends entirely on her own exertions as a clothes washer.” She died on February 9, 1904.
