Black Virginians in Blue
Atlases

Two digital maps below show the locations where Albemarle's Black soldiers and sailors enlisted into the army or navy and where they mustered out at the end of their service. The "Muster Out" map is color coded to reflect the reason why a soldier left the service (i.e. desertion, mustered out, or death). The maps aggregate individual points when zoomed out, but these will split apart into individual points as by zooming in or clicking on a point labeled with a number. Individual points on the map can be clicked to reveal a pop-up with basic data about each soldier or sailor. Click on a Black soldier's or sailor's name to go straight to their biographical record.
