John W. Daniel (65th USCT)
John W. Daniel (Daniels) was born into slavery around 1844 in Albemarle County, Virginia. His owner, Samuel Daniel, was a Virginian by birth and probably brought John to Lincoln County, Missouri, sometime before the Civil War. John Daniel enlisted as a private in the Union army on December 10, 1863, in Troy, Missouri, for a period of three years. He mustered into Company A of the 65th USCT Infantry Regiment on December 18. His enlistment records describe him as a farmer who stood 5 feet, 8 1/2 inches tall and had a "mulatto" complexion, brown eyes, and black hair. After spending time in a Benton Barracks hospital in January and February 1864 for rubeosis and perotitis, he was released back to his regiment in March and moved with it down to Louisiana near Morganza. Daniel unfortunately suffered the fate of many of his fellow soldiers in the 65th USCT, taking sick in Baton Rouge Hospital from May to October 1865. Daniel's time in the army came to an end on December 17, 1866, when he mustered out after fulfilling his term of service. He never filed a pension, and it is unclear what happened to him after the war.
