Preston Gardener (5th USCT)

Preston Gardener was born around 1835 in Albemarle County, Virginia, and he enlisted in the Union army on June 7, 1863, near Fayette County, Ohio. Preston stood 5 feet, 6 1/2 inches tall, with black hair, and black eyes, and a "dark" skin complexion. Two weeks after his enlistment, Gardener mustered into the 5th USCT Infantry Regiment as a private in Company D near Camp Delaware, Ohio. While Gardener initially enlisted for a period of three years, he only served for eight months before dying from an unknown disease on December 1, 1864.
