John H. Hopkins (30th USCT)

John H. Hopkins was born around 1839 in Albemarle County, Virginia. Little is known about Hopkins's life before the war, except that he worked as a laborer and a seaman. On September 5, 1864, at the age of 25, Hopkins enlisted and mustered into the Union army in Baltimore, Maryland. Hopkins's service record describes him as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with black hair, black eyes, and a yellow complexion. Hopkins served in Company C of the 30th USCT Infantry Regiment as a substitute for Alex McGary of Maryland. For much of 1865, Hopkins was assigned as a hospital steward. Hopkins mustered out on December 10, 1865, in Roanoke Island, North Carolina. Nothing else is known about Hopkins's life after the war, and he never filed a pension for his services.
