Daniel Lucas (29th USCT)

Daniel Lucas was born around June 1844 in Albemarle County, Virginia. Lucas and his mother were slaves of John Coles Carter, a member of the illustrious Carter family, one of the First Families of Virginia. John Coles migrated from Albemarle County to Missouri in 1852 and owned 126 slaves on multiple plantations at the onset of the war.

Lucas enlisted at the age of 20 as a private on May 14, 1864, and mustered in on July 8, 1864, in Quincy, Illinois. His service record describes him as 5 feet, 3 inches tall, with black hair, black eyes, and a black complexion. He served in Company F of the 29th USCT Infantry Regiment. He served throughout Virginia and saw much action. He was wounded on July 30, 1864, in the Battle of the Crater during the Siege of Petersburg. He was later hospitalized at Fortress Monroe, Virginia, due to injuries sustained during the battle. He contracted measles while in the Shenandoah Valley in December 1864. Lucas mustered out of the army on June 7, 1865, in Fortress Monroe, due to disability.

Following the war, Lucas went briefly to Qunicy, Illinois, before returning to Missouri. He lived in Paynesville for five years and then moved in Apex. Lucas continued to work as a farmer, and he married Mary J. Lucas on October 20, 1870, in Lincoln County. Together they had twelve children: Martha, whose birth date is not known; James (Jaleo R.), born July 19, 1871; Elizabeth B., born February 27, 1873; William W., born April 20, 1875; Etta M., born October 27, 1877; Matthew (Mattir T.), born March 8, 1880; Edward R., born December 31, 1881; Daniel L., born July 26, 1886; Albert F., born May 22, 1887; George H., born October 17, 1889; Charles A., born March 13, 1892; and Manervia A. Lucas, born December 1, 1894. Lucas suffered from general debility, as well as disease of his respiratory organs, likely due to measles, sunstroke, and rheumatism. Lucas gradually grew blind, causing him to fall and break a rib and his left leg. Lucas first filed for a pension in 1879. By the late 1880s, he was able to receive a pension of $4 a month for his ailments and his service. Lucas died of cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 84 on May 9, 1928, in Foley, Missouri. Following his death, his wife Mary was able to receive a widow's pension of $40 a month.
