Nancy S. Price

Nancy S. Price (maiden name: Scott) was born into slavery around 1838 in Albemarle County, Virginia. Her owner was John Coles Carter, who moved from Virginia to Missouri in 1852 and owned 126 slaves by 1860. She worked as a nurse in the 1850s, and she had three children by an unknown man (or men): Jefferson, Sally, and George. She married Manuel Price, another of Carter's slaves, at Thomas Cobb's house on Lick Farm sometime between December 25, 1863, and January 1, 1864. Nancy and Manuel lived in a house on Lick Farm in Lincoln County, Missouri, along with Manuel's brother and Nancy's sister. Manuel died at Benton Barracks in St. Louis on April 14, 1864, due to complications with pneumonia, and Nancy eventually secured a pension of $8 a month. She lost the pension on March 3, 1866, when she married William Douglass. They had four children together: William, Edward, Emanuel, and Spencer. After Douglass died, she began receiving her pension again in 1888. It is unclear when or where she died.
