Rebecca Pruitt

Rebecca Pruitt (maiden name: Jones) was born into slavery. Her owner was Richard Pruitt of Lawrence County, Alabama. She married Albert Pruitt, another of Richard Pruitt's slaves, around 1849 in a ceremony officiated by Louis Preast. After the war, the couple lived in Alabama, where they had four children: Sherman, born in 1865; Dashe (Dosia), born in 1873; Mary, born in 1875; and Albert, Jr., born in 1877. In 1882, the family moved from Alabama to Lamar County, Texas. She died in 1905 and is buried in Lamar County.
