WILLIAM B. KURTZ

William B. Kurtz was the Nau Center’s Managing Director and Digital Historian from March 2016 to May 2021. He received his PhD in 2012 from the University of Virginia and is author of Excommunicated from the Union: How the Civil War Created a Separate Catholic America (Fordham University Press, 2016).

Born in Albemarle County, Joshua Anderson was 43 years old when he enlisted in Company D of the 10th USCT Heavy Artillery Regiment in New Orleans, Louisiana, on January 31, 1864. Physically, he had black hair, eyes, and skin, and stood 5 feet, 9 1/2 inches tall. Enlisting for three years, he was eventually promoted to sergeant, yet by the end of the war, his rank had been reduced back down to private. He often did daily duty in the post bakery, as he worked as a miller before joining the army. He mustered out with his regiment at Baton Rouge on February 22, 1867.
