Phoebe Cowens

Phoebe Cowens was born in Mississippi around 1830 and married Benjamin Cowens while they were both still enslaved. They were both owned by the Foster family prior to the war. The couple legally married on December 5, 1864, in a ceremony performed by the Freedman's Bureau. They had fourteen children at the time of their marriage, including a son named Serliner, who was born around 1854. After the Civil War, the couple moved to Natchez. Phoebe Cowens died in 1871.
