Jennie Carter was born into slavery and married William J. Carter (Jackson) sometime before the war. Their owner was John Coles Carter, who migrated from Albemarle County, Virginia, to Missouri in 1852 and owned 126 slaves by 1860. Jennie died of an unknown illness sometime after her husband enlisted in the Union army. She probably passed away in Lincoln County, either while he was on furlough or soon after he joined his regiment.
