Louisa Walker Washington lived with George Washington as his wife in Springfield, Massachusetts, after his service in the Union army. She had two sons from a previous marriage. Many of George’s friends disliked Louisa, calling her “a bad woman” and “a hard ticket and intemperate.” She eventually discovered that her first husband, whom she believed to be dead, was actually still alive, and she left George to return to him. She died in Hartford, Connecticut, on October 12, 1879.
