Louisa A. Walker

Louisa A. Walker (maiden name: Daniel) was born into slavery in 1822 in Louisa County, Virginia. Her owner was Dr. Charles J. Merriweather, who moved to Pike County, Missouri, sometime before the war and sold her to William Lewis. After a series of marriages and inheritances, she ended up in Lincoln County, Missouri, where she married Adam Walker. They had three children together, including Charles W., who was born on March 17, 1862. Her husband enlisted in the Union army, and when he failed to return, Louisa assumed he had died during the war. She eventually moved to Quincy, Illinois, and she applied for a widow's pension. Pension agents, however, discovered that Adam had survived the war, and they ultimately denied Louisa's application on the grounds that he had failed to resume marital life with her after the war.
