Susan (Susana) Bass Winfrey was born around 1831 in North Carolina. She married John M. Winfrey in Richmond, Virginia, sometime before the Civil War. Together, they had nine children: George, whose birth date is not known; William V., born around 1855; Mary E., born around 1856; Aseneth D., born around 1858; Fanny, born around 1859; Paulina, born around 1861; Sarah A., born around 1862; Effie J., born around 1866; and Joan G., born around 1869. Following the war, the family moved to Fayette County, Ohio, before settling in Paulding County. She died of consumption in Paulding County on December 25, 1873.
