Lucy A. Gibson (maiden name: Guy) was born around January 1860 in Harmar, Washington County, Ohio. She married her first husband, William L. Hardy, on December 17, 1878, in Muskingham County. Hardy passed away on February 15, 1886. Gibson then married John Jackson on January 27, 1890, in Zanesville. Jackson died on November 8, 1893. Six months later, Gibson married Elva (Elvy) J. Jackson, the son of her second husband. She divorced him on May 18, 1903. A few years later, on October 10, 1906, Gibson married her fourth husband, Nimrod Goins, in Athens.

Goins, however, deserted her on November 4, 1914, to live with his daughter, who later became his legal guardian after his mental faculties worsened. This desertion was eventually the subject of a lengthy legal battle, in which the special examiner determined that Nimrod was not able to form mental intent at the time of the desertion, and that Lucy Goins was therefore ineligible to receive half of his pension. The special examiner remarked that she had a "peppery temper." After her fourth husband's desertion, she lived with Thomas Gibson. Some witnesses claimed that this was an adulterous arrangement. Lucy, however, claimed that she was only his housekeeper and that she kept her own separate bed. Nonetheless, she eventually married Thomas Gibson on October 5, 1916, in McConnelsville, Ohio. In 1930, she described herself as a widow, and she was living with a man named Isaac Austin. She passed away in Cleveland, Ohio in 1937, and was buried in Chesterhill, Morgan County.
