In this funeral notice, The York Daily paid tribute to Nancy Cowles, celebrating her "christian courtesy" and her "ceaseless work in the cause of Christ."
Funeral Services of Mrs. Cowles
The last sad rites of the funeral of the deceased wife of Rev. Jesse S. Cowles were performed at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon at East King street A. M. E. Zion church. The sermon was preached by Rev. S. S. Wales, of Chambersburg. His text was “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.” In his remarks he stated that the deceased had been a member of the church 20 years and a worker in the Sunday school for 23 years. Her work in this city had been one of ceaseless work in the cause of Christ and his Kingdom. After the sermon Rev. Wm. Howard Day, of Harrisburg, paid a glowing tribute to the affability and christian courtesy as demonstrated by the deceased ever since she had been a member of the A. M. E. Zion connection. The high esteem in which the deceased was held in this city was shown by the many beautiful floral tributes from friends. The members of Lodge No. 40, A. Y. M., attended in a body. The members of the Sabbath school and C. E. were largely represented. The husband of the deceased desires to extend his thanks for the kindness shown him in these sad hours of bereavement.
