april the 7 1863 hard times here now
 
dear Mother i received your letter today [?] celly let me have it and i was glad to heare from you and to here that you was all well i am well and tuf as a damd old for year old bull my helth never was better i never was so tuf as i be now we had tuf times here but we are having a nic time now we are goin to Washington patrolin in the city so they say we are in a indepedent Brgade we aint in eny divishon so they cant put us to the front our place is pickiten they think peace will be declared les then two months we are building an old rifle for a fort rite on the bluf where old stuart crost with his cavelry and where old stonwall jackson crost with his armey last summer let him try it now if he wants to now he will find some green yankeys here and some of uncle Sams little po guns let them try it if they like we will give them yankey fun i ges we shant have a chance at them but if we do have to try them / we shall give them hell we have got aplenty of guns to pools vill that we can git here in a half an our i hant no more war news to rite now
