Isaiah F. Hoyt to Francis J. Parker, 19 July 1864
Hd. Qrs. 2nd Brigade
July 19th 1864.

My dear Sir,
Yours of the 14th is at hand. Hamilton's effects were sent from City Point by Govt. transportation and I was told they were to be forwarded to his home but not knowing where that was I addressed them to you. I presume they stopped at the Store house at Alexandria and have requested ex-Sergeant Neff who left here today to place them in the hands of Adams Express on his arrival in Alexandria.

The first rain for forty seven days is now falling in copious showers, blessing both man and beast The dust has been intolerable but mud will now be king I suppose
Did Dana tell you I was at odds with Gen. G.? Having had charge of wagon trains of the wounded it seemed to me an outrage that an officer should keep an Ambulance for his private use, and in my virtuous indignation I reported the matter, but Gen. G. didn't seem "to see it in that light". At the risk of boring you I include a copy of my statement of the case to the War Dept. This document has been referred by the War Dept. to Gen / G. "for explanation" and I understand is now in his hands. This explanation will be more difficult to make than to put me thro' an astonishing course of sprouts which will probably last during all my unexpired term of service. Very likely the Gen. may succeed in making the A.P. too hot for me and I may deem it prudent, gracefully to retire from this contest to the shades of private life in which case I hope you will find me some employment which will keep my babies in bread and health

If you'll excuse me this once I'll never write you more than a page of note paper again. With my respects to Mrs Parker and Mr. [?] Cobb
believe me, I am he,

Yours truly
Isaiah F. Hoyt

[endorsement]
