Isaiah Francis Hoyt
Isaiah Francis Hoyt was born on August 6, 1827, in Beverly, Massachusetts, to Isaiah and Mary Hoyt. By 1850, he was working as a bookkeeper in Boston, Massachusetts. He married Josephine Eastman on July 28, 1853, and they had at least two children: Charles, born around 1855; and Arthur, born around 1858.

In November 1861, he received a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in Company B of the 32nd Massachusetts Infantry. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant on July 21, 1862, and he served as acting quartermaster for much of the war. The regiment took part in the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign, and the siege of Petersburg. He mustered out on November 16, 1864.

Hoyt settled in Essex, Massachusetts, after leaving the army, and he earned a living as a trader. He moved to Chicago in the late 1860s, and he served as a Deputy Collector in the Internal Revenue Service. In 1874, he was promoted to Collector of Internal Revenue for the First District of Illinois. He returned to Boston in the 1870s, and he reportedly worked “in a confidential capacity with the John H. Pray Sons Company.” He served as secretary of the Thirty-second Regiment Association, and he attended several veterans’ reunions in the late 1800s. He applied for a federal pension in January 1904 and eventually secured one. He died of “old age” in Boston on May 8, 1908.
