Jacob Ulch
Jacob Ulch was born on November 9, 1841, in Ohio to Jacob Ulch and Mary Kemberling. His father died around 1848. Ulch grew up and attended school in Fremont, Ohio. He enlisted in the Union army on October 22, 1862, and mustered in as a private in Company C of the 72nd Ohio Infantry later that day. He took part in the siege of Vicksburg, the siege of Jackson, and the Battle of Nashville. The army transferred him to the Veteran Reserve Corps on February 20, 1865, and he mustered out on September 18, 1865.

Ulch returned to Fremont after the war, and he married Amanda Mitchel there on May 1, 1866. They had at least three children: Ada, born around 1867; Mary, born around 1869; and George, born around 1877. Ulch worked as a blacksmith, and by 1870, he owned $1,000 of real estate and $200 of personal property. By 1880, Ulch was apparently struggling to find or carry out his work, as he had been employed for at least 12 months. Ulch applied for a federal pension in October 1891 and eventually secured one. He remained in Sandusky County, Ohio, for the rest of his life, and he died there of “La Grippe” on May 20, 1916.
