Maj Metcalf
Dr Sir
I rec'd a letter to-day from my son George stating you had resigned your Office as Maj. in the 3 R.I. Regt. and it was supposed that you were to have the Office of Col. in the 7th Regt. Should this be correct, Geo. wished me to see or write you, to obtain your assistance and influence to procure the Office of 2d Lieu. for him in the same Regt.
He says he would like to get North as the Southern climate does not agree / him as well as the Northern. he does not complain of his health, he is not one of the complaining kind. You will find him reliable, modest, and unassuming; you will also find pretty well informed for a young man of his years. he will be Twenty next month Capt Tourtellott speaks highly of him. You will recollect I called on you at your office yesterday.
George is patriotic, he enlisted because he thought some one of the family should & he said he could leave better than myself or his brother. He had not a bad habit when he left / home, and Capt T. says he has not acquired any since. If he has been faithful and is suitable I hope he may be promoted. I wish you could write him, you will find he will answer it in a satisfactory manner. he writes a good letter.
Respty yours
