Hilton Head S.C.
September 18 1862

Colonel Metcalf,

Sir
The Ericsson having just arrived here I have seen by the newspapers of your appointment would you by some means try and have me transfered to your Regiment. have you an Adjutant I would most willingly resign my commission as captain in this Regiment and go with you I do not care in what capacity. an orderly Sergeant would do. Would you oblige me by mentioning it to his Excellency the Governor. I beg of you not forget how dearly I should like to be with you. Since you left here I am sick & tyred of this Regiment and would hail with joy the happy day I would be again under your command. I pray you not think lightly of [torn] but endeavour to place me where I can gain the respect of my friends in Rhode Island.

I am Sir
Yours most respectfully
Jerh. Lanahan
