Willis H. Shippee was born on May 12, 1822, in Foster, Rhode Island, to Robert and Anna Shippee. His father was a farmer who owned $700 of real estate. His mother died in 1834. Shippee eventually moved to Killingly, Connecticut, and he married Amy Watkins there on October 23, 1842. They had at least two children: William, born around 1844; and Byron, born around 1848. Shippee worked as a farmer. His wife died in 1851, and he married Laura Graves around 1861. They had at least two children: Willis, born around 1865; and Leonora, born around 1867. By 1870, they owned $600 of real estate. He eventually began working as a stone mason. Laura died in 1896, and he passed away in Killingly on December 27, 1901.
