Henry P. Underhill to Delia L. Hibbard, 6 July 1863
Head Quarters 160
Before Port Hudson
July 6th 1863
Mrs. Hibbard
Once more the painful duty of informing a wife of the death of her husband falls to my lot, & this time it is yours. Yes, Mrs. Hibbard your husband is no more for this world, he departed this life on the 25th of this June at the General Hospital at Baton Rouge where he was removed on the 28th of May, & though you have a husband to mourn for you can proudly say to his relatives he died at his post of duty, while defending our glorious old flag, & the name of deserter will never mark the spot where he lies, no, he has ever done his duty when he was able & proved / himself worthy the title of a true soldier. I can assure you of the deep sympathy of the whole company Officers & men, but to console your deep grief you must look upwards to that Alwise Providence who does all things for the best & extends his sympathy to all that truly ask it.
I have no opportunity at present of informing you the amount due or the manner of getting it but will as soon as possible
Yours &c
