William H. Hibbard
William H. Hibbard was born around 1832 in Palmyra, New York, to Benjamin and Sarah Hibbard. His father was a master carpenter who owned $2,000 of real estate and $2,500 of personal property by 1860. The family moved to Friendship, New York, in the 1830s but returned to Palmyra around 1844. By the early 1860s, he was working as a carpenter. He married Delia Louisa Garvey on March 24, 1861, and the couple had no children.

He enlisted in the Union army on September 5, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company B of the 160th New York Infantry on November 21. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 7 inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes. In January 1863, he “hope[d] this cursed war will end sum time for i have got tiard of solgering.” He explained, however, that “i am not sick of the war but i am sick of the officers & the hed men that carry it on.” He insisted that “we have got to fight to make peace,” adding that the “quicker the battel is fought the quicker we shal get home.”

He died of chronic diarrhea in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on June 26, 1863. Captain Henry Underhill noted that Hibbard performed “his duty when he was able & proved himself worthy the title of a true soldier.”
