Ezra A. Hibbard
Ezra A. Hibbard was born on June 11, 1839, in Friendship, New York, to Benjamin and Sarah Hibbard. His father was a master carpenter who owned $2,000 of real estate and $2,500 of personal property by 1860. The family moved to Palmyra, New York, around 1844, and he grew up and attended school there.

In August 1862, he received a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in Company A of the 111st New York Infantry. The regiment defended Harpers Ferry in September 1862. Union forces ultimately surrendered the garrison, and he received a parole soon afterwards. He spent the next two months in parole camps in Annapolis, Maryland, and Chicago, Illinois. In October 1862, he vowed that Confederates would “never take me prisoner again I will die on the field before I will be taken.” The regiment was finally exchanged in November 1862. That winter, however, he contracted diphtheria, and he mustered out on February 13, 1863.

He returned to Palmyra after leaving the army, and he married Sarah F. Pickney around 1863. They had at least two children: William, born around 1865; and Harry, born around 1876. He worked as a farmer, and by 1870, he owned $1,400 of real estate. They moved to Phelps, New York, around 1872, and by the late 1800s, he was working as a tinner. He applied for a federal pension in April 1892 and eventually received one. His wife died in November 1907, and he passed away in Phelps on February 1, 1910.
