James Churchill Ellis
James Churchill Ellis was born on June 18, 1806, in Plympton, Massachusetts, to Joel and Clara Ellis. He married Nancy Brewster on December 25, 1830, and they had at least six children: Henry, born around 1831; Sarah, born around 1836; Nancy, born around 1838; Isabella, born around 1840; Eunice, born around 1844; and James, born around 1850. He worked as a sawyer and box maker in Plympton, and by 1860, he owned $1,804 of real estate and $272 of personal property. He expressed devotion to the Union during the Civil War, declaring that “wee are all wanted to defend our country and citizenry.” He died of “softening of the brain” in Plympton on October 2, 1875.
