July 14^th 1864

Camp Near Petersburg Va

           

Dear Parents

            I will try to pen a few lines to you this evening to inform you that Daniel & myself are both enjoying good health and I hope this may find you all enjoying the same great blessing. Walker was here day before yesterday & was well. I wrote you a few days ago but am afraid that the rebs got a hold of that letter. I wrote to you for some postage stamps in that letter and told you I would pay for them when I stuck my pig so I will. All is very quiet along our lines since yesterday noon Hardly a gun / shot has been heard since then. I am on guard to night and it is now after 10 O'clock P.M. and I begin to feel somewhat sleepy I received a letter from you this afternoon mailed the 8^th I see by that Pa has commenced his haying already Haint you short of help to gather your crops if you are let us know & I will turn in and help you a bit. I will work cheap for I am not doing any thing down here in fact I hardly earn my salt a greater part of the time & I know I should feel a great deal better if I had more exercise just now but I wont say too much about it for fear I may get more than would be agreeable this hot weather 

 

            Daniel went up where the other part of the Co is yesterday and says he saw George Personius and reports him as looking tough and in good healthy condition We have two men in hospital from this Co yes three of them John F. Malette, Augustus Patterson, John Gunn

 

            P. S. Daniel is snoring away like a good fellow and I will close this and then visit the guards and after that I will turn in too
