Morris Thomas Denny was born on August 11, 1811, in Kentucky. He married Martha Trowbridge on September 6, 1832, and they had at least three children: Sarah, born around 1836; Nancy, born around 1840; and Gilbert, born around 1842. Martha may have died in the mid-1840s, and Denny married Sarah Gordon on February 19, 1846. They had at least five children: Hannah, born around 1848; Diana, born around 1848; Clayton, born around 1851; John, born around 1855; and Francis, born around 1858.
They settled in Washington County, Indiana, and Denny worked as a farmer. By 1860, he owned $1,000 of real estate and $450 of personal property. A decade later, he owned $1,200 of real estate and $7,500 of personal property. He applied for a pension in August 1891 on behalf of his son Gilbert, who died while fighting for the Union army. Denny died on February 24, 1896.
