Dear Parents I take this oprtunity of riting to let you no that I am well at this time and hope those fiew lins ma find you inn the same helth Wee landed here this morning we hav bin on the road 10 days we will leave here inn the morning for the Regt tha are 75 miles from here wee hav to carry our provision knapsacks and all we will hav no way of conveyanc except to carry all the Regt is at Keetsville at this time tha are expecting marching orders towards Memphis / there was 5 killed in our Regt in that turabel Batel at Shugar Creek there was 3 crippled in our company Oliver Strain an Jacob Woods was badly wonded Brisby Mcmahan was slightly wonded in the leg I hav not herd the names of those that was killel killed I saw 500 of the prisners tha was a rough loocking set there was 2 Indians tha started with 4 an killed 2 onn the road tha ought to kill the others evry one of wonded boys tha found tha skelped and a heap of the boys is giting well with / their head skined wee will start onn to morrow for Keetsvill I hav had a good time so far we hav plenty of fresh pork and other things such as can be Jahawked along the road our Army is recruiting fast in this Stait I saw 75 sworn in to the servc toda as I hav such a bad wa to rite I will close rite soon Giv my best respects to all I remain your Sun til deth Gilbert Denny
