Camp Near Decherd Tennessee August 9 1862
Dear Sisters it is with plesur that I take these fiew lesure moments to ansur your welcom leter I was very hapy to here from you and to here that you was well and duing well your leters found me injoying good helth and in good spirits we are camped at Decherd on the Nashville Rail-road and within two miles of winchester Tennissee we got here last tuesday from Tuscumbia Alabama where I spent the month of July we are on our way to Chatanuga forty miles from here where the rebels are about to make another stand I think we will give them a call in a fiew days and see if they are good pluck I spent the forth in camp on Cane Crick near tuscumbia alabama and the time was rather dry we are now two hundred miles east Corinth we have had some hard marching since we lef corinth and the wether is very hot and the roads is very dusty it is the hotest wether that I have ever seen it is so warm in the midle of the day that it will almost burn us up
We have marched through one of the worst Sesesh contries in the south and guariles comes and they would fire on our men every chance they could get General McCook was killed last Tuesday morning by a band guariles he was riding about three miles ahead of our brigade when he was fired at and killed and his body guard taken prisoner General McCook was the comander of our brigade the 2nd Minnesota 9th ohio 35th ohio and the 18th regment United States infantry these four regments formed the brigade of General Robert McCook he was a good man and a brave soldier as ever drew a sword in the service of his contry we all lament his loss we will never find another man that will fill his place as well and nobelely as he has he alway cared more for his men than he cared for himself his body was sent home to Cincinnati ohio I got six yesterday one from mother two from william one from Julyette reiner one you and and one Mary it is the first letters that I have got for over a month for the mail has ben stoped but I think it will go more regular here after at least i hope so for my part
I have not seen or hard from frank for a long time but he is some where in this part of the contry I would like very much to see him you say in your leters that you would like to see me i am sur i would like very much to see you and all my folk at home i gess that i will bring my leter to a clos for this time I mint rite more but i will not this time you will direct you leter to the same place
