George Rutherford to Mary A. Rutherford, 21 December 1864
Gen Hospital Madison Ind.
Dec 21st/64.
Dear Sister
your kind and welcom letter of the 18th came to hand this morning And I ashure you that I am much pleased to hear from you and to hear that you ware well your letter found me well and getting along finely and hope this may find you enjoying all the blessings of helth. My arm is getting along very well And I am in hopes that it will be of some use to me soon you wrote that you would like to have me come to Camp Chase I should like very much to come there but I guess they will keep me here this winter The ohio soldiers canot get to there own State from here and there would be no use for a Minnesota soldier to try / This place will do very well as far as I have seen yet And I supose that I may as well content myself here for the present I am going to try and get my discharge this winter if there is eny such thing if not I will go to my Regiment in the spring and perhaps before spring I should like very much to see the boys of my old Company again and try camp life again with my brothers in arms I call them brothers because we have ben together so long and fought for the one great cause But I know that I could not do my duty as a soldier if I was there This life in a Hospital is no place for a man that feels well Therefore I should rather be some other place I am more content than I was at first for I have got more used to it And this is one of the best places of the kind that I have even ben in
It is snowing quite fast here today And it begins to look some like winter but it is not as cold as it was before I left Minnesota yet there was good skating on the river before I left St Anthony I should like very much to be there and spend Christmas and New years with my friends in old ohio you say that Emma is coming to the Asylum again I should think she would rather stay with uncle John but perhaps she knows best I got a letter from Emma a fiew days ago and one from Rebecca and I was glad to learn that they were all well Rebecca says that she would like to have us there to spend hallow day with her she thinks we could have another great oyster supper I supose you remember the oyster supper that we had there last winter while I was at home
I got a letter from Clara yesterday and John and her are boath well you say that Miss Hessenger would like to see me again I should be most happy see her again and if I can get a pass this winter I will shurely come Give Miss H my love and my respects to all the girls in general And my respects to Mr Barker also. you say that Miss Thompson sends me her best respects first Give her mine also
Well Sister Mary I will close this uninteresting letter hoping to hear from you soon excuse all mistakes and bad writing From your afectionate
Brother
