Francis J. Parker to Anna L. Parker, undated
In Bivouac Near Shepardstown Sept
My dear Wife.
I received this morning yours of the 18th & Mr Cobbs of the 17th Yesterday our Corp (Porters) were repulsed in an attempt to cross over to the Virginia side and we were in view just preparing to cross when Syker & Martindales brigades were driven helter skelter into the river. We laid waiting to repel any attempt on the part of the enemy to cross for the most part of the day and then returned to our previous camp close by. Tents we dont use—a rubber blanket on the ground a blanket below & one above me and another rubber over all make me quite comfortable the days are very hot—the dews at night very heavy. Dont know where we are going next. /
I am sorry to hear of your domestic troubles & hope that they may be speedily over. It would give me pleasure to share your burdens but little Mac cant spare me yet. This campaign is more endurable than that on James River. The men are in better sprits & the country is lovely. Tell Mr Cobb that all the officers and his horse are doing well except being short of fodder.
They say it is Sunday today and laugh at me because without remembering that day I ordered a drill the first for two weeks.
The rebel prisoners say that their army is used up but they fought sharp yesterday. With dear love for yourself and children I am
Affy Your husband
