Stanley Hospital
Newbern Jany. 15th 1863
My dear Sister:
Now don't be frightened when you read this heading, in the hospital I am but am not much sick nor is it one of those terrible holes that you read about.
I have been unwell a little more than one week, one week ago yester-day was on duty but felt quite slim, Thursday reported to the Doct. Sunday I was threatened with a fever and so sent to this place. the fever has nearly all left me, shall be out in a few days.
I am in good quarters and under a good doctor, good food and good / nurses, Northern ladies have not yet found this place but the Sisters of Charity are here and they are all that their name represents. If I am here long I shall be turning Catholic.
My Regt. has again left Newbern, are now a few miles below here but are to remain there only a few days. a strike is to be made somewhere, now have a large army in this Dept. I am afraid I shall be left behind this time. I don't love the long and hard march but where my Co. is there I wish to be.
I do not feel like writing more to-day, you shall hear from me again soon. The Doct. says that I may walk out to-morrow. Continue to direct to Newbern N.C.
I expect letters from home to-day or to- / morrow. Write soon
Your brother
Charles
