Abbie F. Chase was born around 1840 in Maine to Thomas and Esther Chase. Her father was a farmer who owned $2,000 of real estate by 1850. She grew up and attended school in Buckfield, Maine. She supported the Union war effort and the “cause of Freedom.” In August 1862, he wrote that “These are the times that produce heroes and martyrs…The time has come when most of us who have brothers or husbands must choose between duty and pleasure.” She praised the conscription act, insisting that “Every patriot seems to hail this with gladness feeling that by such means along is this terrible rebellion to be crushed.” She died sometime after 1862.
