Charles Chase to Thomas Chase and Esther M. Chase, undated
[fragment]

untill I can do better and no longer. When I see you I can tell you all about it, 'tis an other case of not letting well enough alone. I pitty Mr. Chase, McKinney would like to help hang.

I received your letter containing a bill against Warren Belcher and the bill have given to the Expressman, fear he will have hard work to collect it. Belcher tells him that he will try and pay it next week but they are all slow pay. I shall let him drum him awhile and if he cannot collect then shall try to get his note.

No news of importance from the seat of war to-day. we have regular Sunday papers. I hope this thing will be settled up / some time but fear that time is not very near. If the 300 000 lately called for do not come forward within a few weeks I hope they will draft, am willing to stand my chance.

Eathan is in Pennsylvania trying to get up a sale of trees. You are not thinking of going into that this fall are you? The old farm needs all your time. may not bring quite so much money now but will in the end.

Martin was not satisfied with his place so left the firm. I can't say that I like his style. he is as bad as Uncle Nathan, bound to get every cent he can, is quite different from Lewis & Eathan.

Shall you have a good hay-crop this year? I suppose you are / very buisy cutting it now, George leading off. Has Howard fully recovered his health? You must need all this year. Willie I dare say does the spreading where it is not too heavy and Homer rides the old horse. I wish I could be at home and be boy for about six weeks. I know it would do me good, but I cannot get away. I shall spend two short weeks with you by and by, think I shall wait 'till fruit is ripe.

Things continue as pleasant as ever here with the one exception of which I have written, though it does not affect me of course I feel sad on Mr. Chase's account. All must write often. wish I could see you all this evening. Love to all.

From your son
Charles
