Alonzo A. Miner to Thomas Chase, 8 September 1864
Boston, Sept. 8, 1864.

Mr. Chase,

Dear Sir;
                       We are all afflicted by the intelligence bro't in your letter. We esteemed your son highly. He wrote Mrs. Miner after going into the Service, and she answered his letter, since which we had heard nothing from him. You truly say "you are only one family among thousands similarly bereaved". How terrible is the sacrifice of so many noble young men. Charles was amiable, confiding, and winning. He loved his country, his friends, and his Father above. None are purer or nobler than he. Nor will one drop of blood be shed in vain. Our country will at length be delivered, and the wronged ones be avenged. Please accept our sincere sympathies in this bereavement, and those of our School, to whom I will speak of him as his excellence merits. In bonds of Christian love,

I remain,
Yours truly,
A. A. Miner
